I'm an amateur researcher, so any corrections would be much appreciated - and I suspect many are needed. Below, you'll find a selection of resources that I turned to early and often for beginning to piece together a surface-level understanding of the Century Freeway's impact on my hometown.

  • In Our Path: Incredible photos and essays from Jeff Gates; the greatest resource I found in this entire process.
  • City of Lynwood History Site
  • Newspapers.com: Paid subscription granted access to the Los Angeles Times and a number of now defunct regional LA newspapers that covered developments related to Lynwood and/or the Century Freeway.
  • The L.A. 'Burb: Great primer on the city's history and demographic transformation.
  • The Finding Aid of the Century Freeway: Spent a full day at USC getting acquainted with some of the treasures in this collection; over 20 boxes worth of primary resources.
  • The Last Freeway: Wonderful piece originally published in 2011.
  • Joseph DiMento: Any and everything that he wrote about the topic.
  • Caltrans: Not always easy to navigate, but if you submit a request for information they will respond to you in a timely fashion. I was pleasantly surprised.
  • The Freeway with A Heart: Judge Pregerson's take on the consent decree.
  • Enacted Sites: Incredible thesis from Mary Margaret Thomas through which I discovered the Transitional Use art installation that leveraged abandoned homes.
  • Old Photos on Pinterest: Pleasantly surprising collection that gave me a few leads to chase.

Plus so many other amazing resources...most of which were free.

Will continue working to get a full works cited list updated.
